What is Amazon Aurora?

Amazon Aurora is a proprietary, fully managed relational database engine offered by Amazon Web Services (AWS) as part of the Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS). It is purpose-built for the cloud, combining the speed and availability of high-end commercial databases with the cost-effectiveness and simplicity of open-source databases. Aurora is compatible with both MySQL and PostgreSQL standards, offering up to five times the throughput of standard MySQL and three times the throughput of standard PostgreSQL. Its unique, distributed, self-healing storage system is a key differentiator, as detailed in the Amazon Aurora paper.
