Virgin Radio, part of the globally renowned Virgin brand, needed a complete overhaul of its outdated mobile application to meet modern user expectations. With simplicity, brand consistency, and technical excellence at the core, the new app was designed to deliver instant access to two flagship radio stations, while maintaining the premium feel associated with the Virgin name. CHALLENGES Completely redesigning the user interface to meet global brand expectations and modern usability standards. Replacing the legacy codebase and outdated technologies of the previous app version. Ensuring instant, stable access to two core radio stations through a smooth, intuitive experience. Supporting a wide range of audio formats and maintaining performance on older Android devices. Enabling seamless background playback and control via the notification bar. Boosting user engagement through social media integration and modern UI interactions. APPROACH Lampa joined the project in 2019 as a technology partner to lead the development of a new version of the Virgin Radio app. Our team conducted a full UX/UI redesign, rebuilding the app from the ground up with a focus on performance, stability, and minimalistic design in line with Virgin’s brand identity. We implemented key usability features such as background audio playback and media control via the notification curtain, which significantly improved the user experience. Quick access to social media links was added to increase listener engagement and interaction with the Virgin Radio community. Special attention was paid to performance optimization, ensuring that the app works smoothly even on low-end and older Android devices. We also included support for multiple audio formats to accommodate different streaming sources.
